Wordpress For Content Management

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

wp-orPart of New Leaf's business come from contracted overflow work from other website design companies.  A couple years ago, one of these companies asked me if I could do a regular, business site in Wordpress.  Never having worked with Wordpress, as I stuck to Joomla, Wordpress, it was just another open source blogging platform.  I told them I had never worked with Wordpress but I will look over the system and get back to them.

wp-optionsI downloaded Wordpress and installed it locally and checked out how the the themes were constructed.  There were so many files in comparison to Joomla!  Joomla has an index.php and that's it.  In Wordpress, there were something like 20 files in a single theme so I had assumed it would be complex.  If there is one thing I hate with content management systems, it's over complication in file structure, encryption and counter intuitive template/plugin layouts (I'm looking at you Magento and Drupal).

As I played with the system throughout the week, I realized how much thought was put into development.  Each type of page, post, category, etc template was really well thought out for the end user and other developers.  Not only were the files put in a logical structure, the administration was easy to figure out and actually made sense.

Why should use Wordpress as your content management system?

  • Open source & active community
  • Comprehensive developer docs
  • Easy administration
  • Great template system
  • A plugin for just about anything
  • Update core & plugins with a click
  • Blog & pages in one system
  • Built in image gallery
  • SEO friendly by default
  • Create multiple menus (3.0)
  • Page templates
  • Media Manager
